Description

Located in the deep southern constellation of Musca, Caldwell 108 is surely the most attractively located of the Caldwell globular clusters, nestled as it is alongside the wonderfully named Dark Doodad Nebula.

C108 is located 19,000 light years from Earth and is another of the Caldwell objects discovered in 1826 by redoubtable Scottish astronomer James Dunlop during his stay in Sydney, Australia. The Dark Doodad (also known as Sandqvist 149) lies much closer and is a molecular cloud that obscures stars behind it. Readily apparent as a dark rift in visual observation, longer exposure imaging reveals the dark, reddish clouds that form the nebula.
